Differentiated instruction is a nice idea, but what happens when it comes to grading students? Being sensitive to students' readiness levels, interests and learning challenges while holding them accountable for the same standards can be a challenge. What's fair and leads to real student learning? Join us for a candid look at what grades really mean, and how to handle students' failures, alternative assessments, focusing on evidence not the vehicles used to convey that evidence, averaging, zeroes on the 100-point scale, homework, late work, feedback, re-done work, extra credit, group projects, grading exceptional students, formative vs. summative assessments in grading (or not), sports eligibility, grading special education students in the regular class and much more. While offering practical tips, this workshop reveals participants' core beliefs about teaching and learning and has an unusually high incidence of transforming classroom practice.

One of the first Nationally Board Certified teachers in America, Rick brings innovation, energy, validity and high standards to both his presentations and his instructional practice, which include 39 years teaching math, science, English, physical education, health, and history, as well as coaching teachers and principals. This session will review the different types of teacher contracts, review the documentation process, address the importance of progressive discipline plans, cover documentation strategies, and work through common scenarios for participants to apply the documentation process.

Meredith is an experienced trial attorney whose practice also includes the defense of public entities in appellate matters in state and federal courts. Dr. Bobbi Wegner is an experienced psychologist, speaker, author and advisor focused on cultivating individual and organizational wellness through the power of human connection. She is the founder and CEO of Groups, a connection platform that brings people together to explore areas of shared growth through psychology-based workshops facilitated by experts in group dynamics and facilitation. This session will provide educational leaders with research based strategies to effectively implement Social Emotional Learning to benefit teachers and students in every classroom.

Dr. Bobbi is a Harvard University Professor who writes and speaks internationally on emotional wellness. She has a column in Psychology Today (Perfectly Imperfect Parenting), is a parenting expert on NBC News Learn, and is on the Today Show parenting team, and has spoken on or written for numerous popular publications including NPR, Harvard Health Blog, The Associated Press, Mind Body Green, and Sunrise (Australia’s No. 1), to name a few.

Given her interest in emotional wellness, access, innovation, and entrepreneurship, Dr. Bobbi teaches Groups and Culture, and Motivation at Harvard University. She is committed to furthering mental health access on the board of directors for USA for IOM (The UN Migration Agency) and the board of advisors for Ignite Mental Health, out of Harvard Innovation Lab. She is also a medical writer and reviewer for Buoy Health, a Harvard-Innovation Lab digital health company.

Stephen Peters is a former Superintendent who will share a refreshing look into the positive side of public education. Peters will share practical systems and strategies that guide educational leaders through the development of a culture that gives hope to at risk students.

Teacher retention is an important topic in education today. How can districts continue to grow and retain their best and brightest teachers. Dr. Joe Martin will share research based strategies to identify traps that impact retention as well as ways leaders can avoid these traps to increase teacher engagement and self-efficacy. Dr. Martin had the distinction of becoming the youngest tenured-earning faculty member ever hired to teach at a state university in Florida at the age of 24. He also had the distinct honor of being the youngest professor at his institution to be nominated twice for the “Distinguished Teacher’s Award.” In addition, he has taught students at all levels in K-12, including Title I, alternative ed, and gifted students. As an educational speaker and consultant, he has trained more than 260,000 teachers and administrators during the course of his career.

Dr. Martin has addressed more than 750 organizations, associations, businesses, colleges and universities, churches, and school districts, helping hundreds of thousands of students and staff members across the country achieve more, live and serve more passionately, and maximize their leadership potential. The Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities selected him as their national “College Speaker of the Year,” and he has also been nominated for the “Lecturer of the Year” by Campus Activities Magazine. LeAnn Nichelsen is the author of the book Teaching the Instructional Cha Chas. This session will merge educational neuroscience with a formative assessment process and differentiated instruction. LeAnn Nickelsen will share a four-step cycle of instruction—(1) chunk, (2) chew, (3) check, and (4) change—that has the power to double the speed of student learning. Compatible with any subject area, she will present brain-friendly teaching strategies and plentiful tools that are designed to help transform students into active learners and independent thinkers. Educational neuroscience- and research-based teaching strategies to improve student achievement:

  • Combine brain science with a formative assessment process and differentiated instruction to maximize student learning.
  • Examine effective teaching strategies and differentiation practices so you can bump it up or break it down according to student needs.
